when it rains in new york in the summer, it's like all the street grime, pothole mystery exhaust, rat dander and toxic rain molecules mix to form a pungent and warm stew that mists your skin, seeps into your pores and disperses into your blood stream, ending up in your brain resulting in a less than pleasant mood.
i really dislike the rain in the city. i hope i conveyed that.
and when it rains here it stays....not like in Florida where it will be gorgeous and sunny one second and torrential and disastrous the next.....only to be amazing three seconds later.
actually - i speak a bit too soon. as of right now, the sun is out. that was unexpected. i like when that happens.
this morning I did 20 minutes on the stairmaster at the gym. I have to make sure i hop out of bed at 5.01am and am out of my house by 5.22 in order to grab the train that comes around 5.33am to get to the gym by 5.38am. I am out of the gym by 6.03 and on the train by 6.12; home by 6.18.
I like NYC for the fact that you have to time your life precisely or you will wait and be late. it also helps me to scurry out of bed when the alarm goes off because I know if I dont make it to that train then I will miss my chance to use the stairs in the morning. And I hate running on leg day - I tend to exhaust my appendages when I run and I wish not to compromise my squats.
But I LOVE my 20 minutes on the stairs in the morning. And I've heard lately, a lot of "experts" and "gurus" discouraging the use of such machines for reasons revolving around lactic acid buildup. Who really gives a shit. I dont. Cardio is cardio is cardio. Shut the hell up with your expert opinions AND with the science. I say this because it's in my nature to overthink everything I do....and to rely on MS excel to make sense of all the new thoughts and plans that zip through my synapses. Trust me, I could see how the science surrounding this topic makes perfect sense. I still am sure to implement my muscle protecting regimen and ingest appropriate supplements before and after cardio.
But this all goes back to what I've said before about "everyone thinks they know what is best for you." Stand for something or fall for anything, right?
I refuse to overthink cardio (at least in this stage of my game). I sweat like a monster and enjoy better endurance while I dart around the city - up the stairs, down the stairs - to the train platforms. I really dont know how the droves of out of shape, overweight people can do it. Sometimes even I feel winded after a commute. I guess the typical out of shape NYer's body has adapted or evolved to handle the increased physical work load....and a poor diet is still a poor diet, which is why many remain out of shape.
But in the evening, I do stairs for 30 minutes a few times a week (but never after training legs). Time permits the extra ten minutes when I'm working out in the evening. My endurance is kick ass and my runs are better than ever. I run 2-3 times a week - mixing between distance and sprints - because it's so freeing to hop and cartwheel down Ocean Parkway while people look at you like "she must have so much energy because she's high on crack."
Nope. Just high on life mother-f***er
And soon, the weather will permit me to run on the beach again! What a feeling that is.....
I just love the climb. Up and up and up and up.....I just keep climbing hoping that one day there will be something worthwhile at the top.
There's only one way to find out.
